BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John Gould, an English zoologist known mainly for his work in ornithology, was born on September 14, 1804 in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England. Gould published over forty illustrated volumes on birds and mammals from the 1830s to the 1880s, including A Century of Birds from the Himalayan Mountains, The Birds of Australia, The Mammals of Australia, and The Birds of Great Britain. While he often made preliminary sketches, the finished illustrations were made by other artists, and chief among them was his wife, Elizabeth Gould, until her death in 1841. Later he worked with Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf, and William Matthew Hart. Gould died on February 3, 1881.
