Afrika Bambaataa is an American disc jockey, singer, and songwriter from the South Bronx, New York. Often called the “Godfather”
of Hip Hop, Bambaataa has helped to define Hip Hop since it emerged in the South Bronx in the 1970s. One of a handful of
Hip Hop's 1970s originators, Bambaataa gave Hip Hop its name, and was the first to define its core artistic elements - DJing,
rapping, break dancing, and graffiti art - under one cultural umbrella. His cultural organization, the Universal Zulu Nation,
has helped to spread Hip Hop culture throughout the world. His genre-defining 1982 song "Planet Rock" and subsequent electro-funk
tracks have become icons of hip-hop and electronic music. In 2007 he was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame.

Series IX. Music collection
|
|||||
The rarest items in this series are in boxes 104 and 105. All 10 inch discs are in box 104. Box 103 contains the less rare
items that were not digitized.
|
|||||
Removed from original jackets and resleeved in buffered sleeves. If original jacket had post-it note from Renegades of Rhythm
tour, the post-it was kept on the jacket. Original jackets are stored behind acetate disc.
|
|||||
Subseries contains discs made of lacquer on aluminum often referred to as "Acetates". These are some of the rarest items in
the Bambaataa collection and are very fragile. Jackets and discs have often been stored separately because of their fragility.
Included are several mixes of beats and samples, some produced by the Sunshine Sound record label and many others with no
credits. It is possible that Bambaataa had them pressed for his own use, but we are unable to determine based on the descriptive
information written or printed on the jackets or labels. This series also contains master pressings of some of Bambaataa’s
albums and singles and those of other artists. Many of the items in Box 104 and 105 have been digitized. There are a few vinyl
discs in the series that were misfiled. Titles have been taken from the label on on the vinyl or what is written on the jacket,
unless, once digitized, its found innacurate. This will be indicated in the scope and contents note for that item. Side one
and side two are sometimes on two different discs because the acetates were used for pressing vinyl.
